Strike Force Diffey Media Release

A man who attempted to import 254kg of pure methamphetamine concealed within 609kg of Chilli sauce from the United States has been sentenced to 8 years’ imprisonment.

Strike Force Diffey was established as a joint Investigation between the NSW Police Organised Crime Squad and NSW Crime Commission into the importation of prohibited drugs and money laundering activities. In October 2019, Australian Border Force officers identified a consignment of Chili sauce from the United States, which was found to contain methamphetamine.

After intercepting the consignment, NSW Police officers substituted the methamphetamine with an inert substance and tracked the delivery to a location in Sydney. Two men, Trung Son Nguyen and Linh Bui were subsequently arrested and charged with attempt to possess commercial quantity unlawful import: border-controlled drug.

On 18 February 2022, Mr Nguyen was sentence to 8 years' imprisonment with a non-parole period of 4 years and 10 months. Mr Bui pleaded guilty and was sentenced in July 2020 to 7 years 6 months imprisonment with a non-parole period of 4 years 6 months.

Strike Force Diffey investigations and matters before the Court have now been finalised.
